Raito is a very serious young man, with an amazing ability to think things through. He never acts rashly, and in general he has a knack for seeing through people. He barely shows any emotion, and when he does, he masks it very well. Raito never lets anyone become close to him, unless he is using them for something.

Raito also has a very distorted sense of justice. He thinks the world is full of scum, and only the best deserve to live. This is where the Death Note comes into play. Raito receives a mysterious notebook titled "DEATH NOTE", although initially skeptical, after realizing that the "Death Note" is a Shinigami's tool with the power to kill anyone whose name is written on its pages, Raito decided to use it to "cleanse" the world of evil.

Raito believes what he is doing is right, but others claim he is a murderer, earning him the nickname 'kira'.
